Through History

NH adopted the first state constitution on January 5, 1775 - six months prior to the Declaration of Independence.

After a chain of events during early 1775, British royal governor, John Wentworth, flees NH after an attack on his home by loyalists in June 1775. By August of that year, NH is left government-less. Between October and November of 1775, delegates to the Continental Congress lobby to form its own government. After permission was granted in November, representatives of the people of NH were called to Exeter to form a plan for the future of state government and to draft the first state constitution of all the 13 colonies. In the words of the delegates themselves, they were writing their own constitution “never to return to our former despotic state.”

The KES Kindergartners invite all of their Kensington neighbors and friends to join them on December 18, at 10am, to celebrate the season with coffee, caroling, and treats! Everyone is welcome at the Kensington Elementary school next Thursday morning!

Today we visited Miss Fanny Lovering, who died of cholera at the age of 44 and is buried on the property of the home she was born in. You can visit her too if you drive down Highland Road. She’s not far off the road next to the big green house on the east side of the road. Rest in Peace, Fanny. We remembered you today!

Would I, could I live in a former Grange Hall! This is the cutest airbnb in the world and you can feel the community love of former times here. The Lower Intervale Grange No. 321 in Plymouth was built in 1912 and restored as a quaint vacation rental in 2021. It even has its original piano and all of the original dishes to be used to by guests! The chapter is still active, though they hold their meetings in another location now that the Grange is rented out to those visiting the area! #grangehall #formergrange #airbnb #communityspirit #restoration #plymouthnh

Recently discovered at the New Hampshire State library: a clock made in Kensington! This clock was crafted in 1784 by Deacon Jeremiah Fellows. His shop was located on Amesbury Road and he and his son (also Jeremiah) made clocks like this for local families and beyond. Jeremiah also made agricultural and household tools, mended firearms, and made hardware for furniture- all in addition to being a Deacon and a farmer! He also operated a tavern. That’s what we call a jack of all trades!

This particular clock belonged to the Heard family, whose members are descendants of Benjamin Fellows, Jeremiah’s brother. If you want to see a Fellows clock up close and personal, there is a similar clock on the second floor landing at the Kensington Social Library!

Our board members and volunteers are officially prepping for our annual yard sale during Old Home Days. Starting on July 12th, volunteers will be at the schoolhouse on Saturdays from 9 AM – 12 PM to accept donations and offer early shopping for the sale. **Please remember, we cannot accept office furniture, electronics, clothing, or upholstered furniture. Please do not leave your donations outside on the property at other times. If you have larger pieces of household furniture in good condition that you’d like to donate but need help moving, please contact us and we can arrange to pick up the week of the sale. **

Great morning cleaning stones in the Lower Yard with the Cemetery Trustees. It’s SO satisfying to watch that dirt and grime reveal the people’s names and stories hidden beneath. One stone told a heartbreak tale of a new bride who died not long after she married her love. Mary T. Badger died in 1854 at the age of 20. Her new husband added this epitaph to her gravestone:
“She scarcely had become a bride
which promised happiness for years
Ere death, the sacred bond untied,
and I was left alone in tears
To me, she was a friend sincere
Our hearts were bound in friendship dear
But now what anguish rest my heart

They’ll demonstrate safe and effective methods for sprucing up historic grave markers. Trustees and volunteers can also help assist with cleaning family gravestones on request.

If you’re planning to join us, wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and bring protective eyewear (safety goggles or even sunglasses are fine.)

Other equipment to bring if you have it handy:
soft-bristle brushes or old toothbrushes (nylon/plastic/horsehair - no metal!)
pump-pressure garden sprayers
empty spray bottles
buckets
rubber gloves

You learn something new every day! Last night our friends at the Hampton Falls Historical Society hosted a NH Humanities presentation by Steve Taylor, who talked about the “Romance and Reality” of one-room schoolhouses. Here are some of the fun facts that we learned from Steve:

1880-1920 were the peak years of one-room schoolhouses. The average age of a teacher at a one-room schoolhouse was 19 years of age. Women were allowed to hold office and vote on school boards by 1878! It wasn’t until 1889 that all students were required to be provided with textbooks.

And the coolest fact: there are still TWO one-room schoolhouses in current use in New Hampshire. The Croydon Village School, built in 1780, is still in use today as the Kindergarten and 1st grade classroom! It is the oldest continually operating schoolhouse in New England. Another, the Blue School, in Landaff, NH, hosts kindergarten through 4th grade! The Blue School was built in 1858. What a cool place to go to school!

We recently received a message from the Boxford Historical Society which is located in a historic home once owned by a descendant of the Nudd family, Ida (Nudd) French. Ida was born in Kensington in 1853 and moved to Massachusetts when she wed Elvin French, a local musician. Ida brought many items from her family home in Kensington with her to Boxford, including these adorable children's plates which had belonged to herself and her brother and sister when they were small.

We are pleased to know these treasures that once belonged to a Kensington family are being well cared-for in Boxford, MA! Thanks @boxforddocs !

Join Kensington Historical Society intern, Mikayla Tilden, for another journey through Kensington’s most interesting artifacts and history. Mikayla will be presenting a few more of her favorite items and stories that she has come across while cataloging the Historical Society’s artifacts in the Sawyer Room. We were blown away last winter at her favorite finds!

The presentation will be hosted in the Sawyer Room at the Kensington Library on Thursday, April 10, at 6:00pm.

We recently discovered Harry Bodwell’s “Cow Tale” written and illustrated by our very own Board member and artist, Richard Fyler, in the children’s room at the library. What a fun tale of a routine isolation of a cow in the barn yard turned into an epic comedy, immortalized forever by Richard’s drawings in this book. The story ends with a flying cow doing a cartwheel and getting her hoof stuck in Harry’s pocket. Afterwards, there was much laughter and a great story to be told!

This year, the Historical Society will be looking for more local stories as we launch an Oral History Project. Hello Kensington neighbors and friends from beyond our borders! We’re planning a social media comeback soon to announce all of our plans for 2025! It’s been a restful break from the socials but we’re ready to get back to it and share all the history, all the local happenings, and all of the exciting projects on our horizon this year.

Until our first announcement, enjoy this photo of my fireplace with a giant glass of wine in a custom-etched glass made by Kensington’s own @thistle_on_pine . Just an FYI- this glass holds more than half a bottle. Cheers to 03833! And wish me luck getting up my stairs tonight 😝

Pausing our hiatus from social media to say farewell and thank you to a Kensington institution: the Farm at Eastman’s Corner. We’ll miss this community hangout and farm store that was the sight of many new board member interviews and a few Historical Society meetings, but most of all it was a big supporter of all things local and Kensington. Thank you for what you meant to our small community over the years. You will truly be missed @eastmanscorner
