About Us
The Historical Society of Kensington was founded in 1970 by a group of almost 200 residents interested in preserving the historical buildings and artifacts within our community. For over 50 years, the Society has been keeping records, collecting documents and artifacts, and educating the public on all aspects of our local history.
The Society was established to:
-
Preserve the historical records of town;
-
Preserve and maintain its antiquities;
-
Interest and encourage the younger generation in perpetuating the traditions of the town.

The North School
On January 19, 1972, we entered into an agreement with the School Board of Kensington wherein the Society would assume responsibility for the care and maintenance of the “old brick schoolhouse.” The North School, as it officially known, is located on the corner of Moulton Ridge Road and Amesbury Road (Route 150). The interpretation of the schoolhouse reflects the school’s condition from its earlier days through the whole period of its operation (1842-1953). School-related collections items and other artifacts from Kensington's history are on display in the schoolhouse.
The North School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. It is used for programs for local school children and is open for visitation from the public on Saturdays during the month of July. The lack of heat and plumbing limits the functionality of the building for year-round use.

In addition to maintaining the North School, the Society provides assistance with genealogical and historical research, presents programs on various historical topics, and hosts an annual yard sale as a fundraiser to support our mission.
